Tortilla Flat is presumed to be the smallest Arizona community with it’s own post office and voter’s precinct. The Tortilla Flat Superstition Saloon has been serving food and drink for more than 100 years. The early settlers who decided to make Tortilla Flat their permanent residence kept up the lease on the land in later years whenever it came due. The freight camp at Tortilla Flat, as well as the other camps along the road to the dam, were, therefore, on U.S. The Forest Service was needed to manage the land and protect watershed for the dams because cattle grazing was taking a toll on the land. Since those early days there seems to have been some number of people living there from then on.įorest Service records show Tonto National Forest being established in 1905 as kind of a “package deal” with the Salt River Reclamation Project. Originally it was established as a freight camp. The little town got got its start because of the road construction to Roosevelt Dam in 1904. Tortilla Flat is one of the last remnants of the “old west”.

Tortilla Flat is nestled in the Superstition Mountain Wilderness/ Tonto Forest. The location is very close to Gold Canyon Arizona. Today visitors can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, OHVing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, water sports, picnicking and wildlife viewing.Ĭanyon Lake Campground is also nearby and Lost Dutchman State Park is about 40 minutes away.Tortilla Flat Arizona is home of a famous authentic stage coach stop. The area is rich with history including cowboys, gold mining and lost gold mines. Tortilla Campground – Area Recreation & Activities The town of Tortilla Flat is also across the highway and has a restaurant, post office and gift shop. There’s also a marina, boat ramp, boat rentals, restaurant and store a few miles away at Canyon Lake. Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets and a dump station.

Each site also has a table, fire ring and grate. All of the sites have views of rugged bluffs, saguaro cactus and clear desert skies.Ĭampsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (up to 32 feet). Campsites 1-29 are indefinitely closed, but sites 30-76 are open for reservations from October through April of each year. Tortilla Campground has 76 single-family campsites and a few miles from Canyon Lake in the Tonto National Forest.
